Have an idea for how rural tax prep programs can do just a little more to help rural families a whole lot?
We do! Several VITA programs are spending just one minute with families at tax sites to ask them if they have affordable health insurance. If they don’t, tax volunteers use computers, tablets or even smartphones to ask families seven quick questions and screen the family for Premium Tax Credits — tax credits that lower the cost of high quality health insurance purchased through the new marketplace. How do they do it? They are using a simple online tool called the Subsidy Calculator, a tool put together by the folks at the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.
